susanna hertrich
Short bio
Susanna Hertrich was born in Paris in 1973 (German nationality). She lives and works in Berlin after studying at the Royal College of Art in London under Dunne & Raby. Her body of work includes photography, installations, machines, interactive pieces to storytelling and video. She works in between the areas of Art and Science and Critical Design. A recurring topic is the articulation of the Freudian idea of the »Uncanny« and the concept of designing for the »Id«. In doing so, her works speak about psychological dilemmas, neglected needs and secret desires, often in context of scientific scenarios.
Awarded the »output design prize« in 2009, the »I. D. Magazine Design Award« in 2008 and the Norwegian Arts Council's »Art & Technology Grant« in 2005, and recently exhibition grant from Schering foundation and a project grant from the German Federal Cultural Foundation, Susanna's works receive acknowledgement from both, art and design audiences.
She exhibits her work internationally, among others at Transmediale Berlin, Abandon Normal Devices Festival at FACT Liverpool, Art and Design foundation KOP in the Netherlands and the Piksel Festival in Norway. 2010 she had her first solo show at Felix Ringel gallery in Düsseldorf under the title of »Gloomy Haven«. One of her works, »Chrono-Shredder« has been nominated for the international design award at DMY Berlin festival 2010.
Susanna was appointed professor at the National Academy of the Arts in Bergen in Norway between 2002 and 2006. She now holds a position as visiting researcher at Design Research Lab of Deutsche Telekom Laboratories, besides pursuing her own projects.
