Familiarise yourselves with some of the key issues surrounding nanoscience and nanotechnology, especially its potential social, cultural and ethical impact on society. Identify either a hope or fear for nanotechnology and develop it into a 'what if...?' scenario. Treat it as though it has already happened, and bring back some compelling evidence from your scenario (artefacts from the future).
For this project, I was investigated the hopes connected to nanotechnology. Following research and media, it seems that nanotechnology is expected be the one solution for all the very serious environ- mental issues of today and tomorrow. This idea of nanotechnology being the universal answer to all our tech-dreams reminds me of the rather naive attitude to nuclear power in the 1950's.
If we manage to reduce massive and complex industrial processes to a minimum of space by using nanotechnology, we can as well have them take place in people's homes. The idea behind homedustry is the fusion of industry and the home, to create a fully sustainable, self- sufficient habitat, as a reaction and solution to deal with near future environmental threats and constraints.
After doing some research on modern sewage systems and concerns about urine "pollution". I read about the nano-membrane developed by Eric Hoek and took this as a starting point to "invent" the first product of the HOMEDUSTRY series: The nano-tech-based urine filter. The idea is to separate urine from other waste waters in the home. Filling the urine into the nano-based filtering system, people can produce fresh drinking water within seconds.
In a timeless "film noir" setting, the potential of the HOMEDUSTRY concept is shown in a rather drastic example, based on the threat of near future water shortage.
