Silicon Pigs and Oysters

Match Making Device

Brief: Silicon Pigs and Oysters

The interfaces of electronic products make us aware of data; and the management of data. These interfaces are often constrained to screens, the interaction being dependent on cursors, pointers and menus. Reconsider the interface through the manipulation of physical objects in real space. Imagine how a sequence of actions (and the effects or outcomes of these sequences), might link to digital content and metadata.

Project context

This project is a group work with Steven Levon Ouanian. It came out of a one week workshop on RFID technology. This project is about an electronic artefact which exhibits behaviour as a result of proximity and touch, and explores the communicative potential of objects.

Project idea

Steve and I decided to use the RCA ID-cards for our project. When the card is swiped over the device, a photograph of you is secretly taken and then matched to someone else in the database, who potentially makes your perfect match...for business, love or anything else. As Steve puts it " this machine shows you your numerical destiny you didn’t know you paid for."

Function

The case hides a laptop with a built-in camera and the RFID reader that is able to read the official RCA-ID card. The computer runs a Processing program. If a card is recognized by the reader it sends a signal to laptop to take a photograph. The photo and the number of the card are saved and then combined with another person, whose number matches.
