Reality Checking Device

Background

The media is out of control. Seeking our attention, they provide us with new fear stories day after day. What should we fear – terrorist attacks or bird flu? Are we more likely to die a slow death of cancer or a quick death on the motorway?

The Reality Checking Device allows to navigate through a set of fear stories. It delivers a visual response that reveals the relation between public outrage and actual hazard.

We live in extremely safe times, yet there are so many abstract threats and potential dangers pressing on our consciousness all the time. The Reality Checking Device helps to clarify the relationship between mere media outrage and actual hazard, for a society in which anxieties have become a lifestyle choice.
