Haunted Lands is a series of documentary photos taken in Fukushima prefecture’s coastal area in Japan in May 2016. This area was devastated in 2011 by two disasters: First, a natural disaster followed by a massive technological failure. A mighty earthquake with a severe tsunami struck the coastline, destroying vast human settlements and killing thousands of people. As a direct result of the natural forces, the nearby nuclear power station Fukushima Dai-Ichi collapsed, causing radioactive contamination, which will remain on the land for an undefined time. This series evolved while shooting the short film Brighter Than A Thousand Suns.

Haunted Lands wurde im Mai 2016 in der Küstenregion der Präfektur Fukushima in Japan aufgenommen. Dieses Gebiet wurde 2011 durch zwei Katastrophen verwüstet: Zunächst eine Naturkatastrophe, gefolgt von einem massiven technischen Versagen. Ein gewaltiges Erdbeben mit einem schweren Tsunami hat die Küste erschüttert, weite Teile der menschlichen Siedlungen zerstört und Tausende von Menschen getötet. Als unmittelbare Folge der Naturgewalten brach das nahe gelegene Kernkraftwerk Fukushima Dai-Ichi zusammen und verursachte eine radioaktive Verseuchung, die auf unbestimmte Zeit im Land bleiben wird. Die Fotoreihe entstand als während der Dreharbeiten zu dem Kurzfilm Brighter Than A Thousand Suns.
