When The Higher Gods Came Down To Planet Earth
Installation for group show Wired Magic • 27.11.2021–30.01.2022 • HEK, Basel
The installation comprises a sculpture, a poster, and a chalk drawing, all engaging with the concept of aether. Once considered the divine realm of the gods, the idea of aether resonated across
various domains: from ancient physics and pseudo-scientific beliefs to serving as a placeholder for the radio spectrum. Recently, it has resurfaced as metaphor about the strange behavior of particles in the Quantum realm. The sculpture draws on Platonic geometry, referencing aether’s classical origins. However, parts of the sculpture are wrapped in tin foil, nodding to esoteric beliefs and conspiracy theories—domains where the notion of a true aether scape still thrives.

The exhibition Wired Magic looks at the rituals and methods artists use to relate magical thinking and other forms of knowledge production to the use of modern technologies. The exhibition invites the audience to question their own impressions and encourages the exploration of reality through technology.

Die Installation besteht aus einer Skulptur, einem Poster und einer Kreidezeichnung, die sich alle mit dem Konzept des Äthers beschäftigen. Ursprünglich als himmlischer Sitz der Götter angesehen, lebte die Idee des Äthers in unterschiedlichen Kontexten weiter: von der alten Physik über pseudowissenschaftliche Vorstellungen bis zum Platzhalter für das Radiospektrum. In jüngerer Zeit taucht der Begriff als metaphorische Umschreibung für des rätselhafte Verhalten von Quantenteilchen erneut auf.
Die Skulptur greift Elemente der platonischen Geometrie auf und verweist auf die klassischen Ursprünge des Äthers. Einzelne Teile der Skulptur sind jedoch mit Metallfolie umwickelt – eine bewusste Referenz auf esoterische Glaubenssysteme und Verschwörungstheorien, in deren Kontext die Idee eines realen Äthers noch immer fortbesteht.

Die Ausstellung Wired Magic befasst sich mit den Ritualen und Methoden, die Künstler:innen anwenden, um magisches Denken und andere Arten der Wissensproduktion mit dem Einsatz moderner Technologien zu verknüpfen. Die Ausstellung lädt das Publikum ein, die eigenen Vorstellungen zu hinterfragen und animiert dazu, die Realität mittels Technologien zu erforschen.
